June 2012 Archives

Two people walking down a futuristic Cowley Road near the Maroc
Deli and Alma Place. One says 'Next year, they say, we shall
DEFINITELY have a carnival.'
Cowley Road Carnival would have been held on Sunday, had the organisers not cancelled it because "There is a lot going on in Oxford this year" And therefore, "by taking a break, the community can focus on all of these and we can benefit from a longer planning period to return in 2013". Perhaps, therefore, better to leave an even longer planning period...

By the way, Maastricht, Köln, and many other cities manage to hold their carnivals each year. Why can't Oxford?

The Oxford Town Crier, Anthony Church, standing outside Vodafone and thinking smugly 'My voice has TWICE the range of any of their phones!' He holds a scroll reading 'Oyez Oyez! Come all ye freshers and turn your squalid bedsits into palatial palaces'.
I presented this cartoon to Anthony Church, the Oxford Town Crier, this morning for the national Town Crier competition today shown in this and this photo from Elise Benjamin. The text on the scroll is what he was proclaiming for a poster sale to freshers last October.
